How It Began & Grew in Ohio

Entertainment icon and savvy businesswoman Dolly Parton founded the  Imagination Library in 1995. Growing up in the hills of East Tennessee, her father's inability to read and write inspired her to begin her Imagination Library within her home county. Today, her program spans five countries and gifts over 2 million free books each month to children around the world.

After seeing the impact of the program on her own family, First Lady Fran DeWine established the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Ohio in 2019. In November of 2020, it grew to encompass all 88 counties of Ohio.

Yes! In Ohio, we want to make sure every child receives a monthly book from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Ohio. By working with the Ohio Department of Children and Youth, we have found a way to streamline enrollment for children in foster care. These children have been eligible to receive the books, but in the past, it has been challenging to update addresses appropriately.

By having the department's support, DPIL can ensure that books follow the child in a timely manner. Address will be updated and the monthly book delivery will follow the child from foster home to foster home. DPIL is also ensuring that the information regarding children in foster care, and foster care parents, continues to remain protected.
